Direct thermal printing vs. thermal transfer printing
Direct thermal printing applies heat directly from the thermal head onto the surface of the paper or label, generating the chemical reaction of the paper, that is, printing. This makes them fast prints to perform.
On the other hand Thermal Transfer uses an ink ribbon that heats up and transfers the print on several different surface types.
The main difference between both printing technologies is that the first one does not use any ink cartridge, while the second one does. This fact is a great advantage offered by thermal printers, taking into account that by not using any type of consumable it helps the equipment hardly require maintenance.
Direct thermal printing can be used in many different applications. For example, it is used by transport agencies for identification labels, in health centers for printing health graphics, for visitor accreditation, or for other applications such as parking meter tickets and POS receipts.
In addition, thermal printing is much cheaper, considering it does not use consumables and that maintenance is minimal.
